Classification Of Computers According To The Purpose They Serve

Some Computers are classified according to the number of purpose that is expected to carry out. They are not found on their own. Rather, they are embedded in other devices. They are therefore called embedded computers.

  1. Special Purpose Computers 

These types of computers that are programmed to perform a specific work, once booted it goes straight to the task. They are also known as “Dedicated Purpose Computers” e.g. for Guidance and control of airplanes, registration of voters card, GSM Phones, Some cars, TVs, Radios, Fuel Pumps e.t.c 

  1. General Purpose Computers 

These are types of computers built for varieties of work. Many programs can be installed on them and run, they are called “General Purpose Machines” as they handle many kinds of tasks. All the computers you see are of this type.

  1. Classification Of Computers Based On Data Type

Three main categories can be identified:

  1. Analogue Computers

These computers are concerned with  data information inform of varying signals that assume an infinite number of grades during variation, e.g. changes in physical or electrical stage rather than counting as in measuring temperature, voltage, or volume. Such type of data is called analogue data. Analogue computers take analogue data and give out analogue information.

  1. Digital Computers 

These computers process data in discrete form, example Yes or No, On or Off. They count numbers and only produce integers and input must be integral form. Everything is translated into a series of numerals or digits. Such type of data is called digital data. Digital computers receive digital data and give digital information.

  1. Hybrid Computers 

These are the computers that merge both the functions of both Analogue and digital signals using converter and work as a single system. They accept one type of data, and give out another type of data.
